Noach is a very difficult person to assess. The Rabbis of the Midrash themselves were of different minds regarding Noach. The truth is that the righteous, perfect, G-d-pursuing Noach is a very complicated person. Therefore, tragedy comes forth from his behavior after the flood, just as his behavior and influence before the flood apparently was unable to arrest the world's dive into disaster. Noach certainly had the opportunity to fashion the world in his image, so to speak, after the flood. But it was not to be. The majority of Noach's descendants reverted back to the evil behavior of society before the flood. It is almost as though the flood and all of its tragedy was a waste. And I cannot think of a greater waste than a wasted tragedy. And this is perhaps the greatest point of criticism that the Rabbis leveled at Noach - that the flood and its lessons were never exploited to improve human society after the flood.
And this is the strongest point of comparison and difference between Noach and Avraham. Avraham also lived in a generation of tragedy and disaster. Believers were thrown into the furnace, morality was scoffed at, the project of the great Tower of Bavel was abandoned after countless lives were lost in the attempt at its construction and Avraham was an isolated figure of Godliness in a world of paganism and evil. Yet, Avraham himself had assimilated the lessons of his generation within his being. He saw the emptiness and lawlessness that surrounded him and resolved to create a counter-force of goodness and faith that would eventually (according to the opinion of Rabbi Menachem HaMeiri in the introduction of his commentary to the book of Avot) win over half of his generation to the concepts of human goodness and monotheism. Avraham, who always lived with danger and on the brink of tragedy and disaster, never flinched nor fled, He did not withdraw into himself and abandon his role of human leadership. He learned the lessons of the generations that preceded him and did not allow himself to be traumatized by those tragedies and wasting those terrible events.
The Jewish people, the children of Avraham, have reeled from tragedy to greater tragedy in our long and difficult history and exile. In our century, the Holocaust and the vicious pogroms of the first third (pre-Holocaust) of the century, have decimated our people. They have not only destroyed us physically but they have also crippled us emotionally and spiritually. It would have been perfectly understandable had the Jewish people in our time just curled up and withered away, turning the experience of the Holocaust into a wasted historical event. The grandeur of our times is that even though many Jews have given up on themselves, have intermarried, assimilated, secularized, and disappeared, the Jewish people as an entity has followed the path of Avraham and not Noach. Not only is the State of Israel an example of Jewish determination and constancy, but the strong development of a Torah life-style amongst large numbers of Jewish communities the world over, is a testimony to dealing with and defeating tragedy. Our Rabbis said that Avraham reaped the rewards of all of the ten generations after the flood. He saw their disasters, experienced the flames of his own potential destruction, and yet rose to proclaim a Godly world of human good and compassion. That is what is meant that he reaped the reward of those previous generations. He learned their lessons, corrected their shortcomings, and moved on to create a new world that would justify his faith. Our generation is faced with this very same challenge. Let us build Avraham's world and reap the rewards of the countless generations of human failure and misery that have preceded us.
Shabat Shalom.

Green Fairy

"For me, my glory is but a humble ephemeral absinthe."- Paul Verlaine

Godol Hador deals with drugs and the like in his new post as does addeRabbi.
So I figure I tell my little tale of hallucinogens:
After my sukos stay in Israel "I might have" stopped in the duty free store and "might" have bought a bottle of Absinthe , "The Green Fairy".
Absinthe was the trademark drink during the 19th century Paris. Famous artists, Bohemians, writers and poets like Picasso, Baudelaire, Hemingway, Edgar Allen Poe, Degas, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Oscar Wilde all indulged in it. Ahh' The mystical allure of "The Green Fairy" Absinthe has been banned in the United States since 1915 because people were having way too much fun.
The trick is the ingredient "Wormwood" from the Anglo-Saxon word wermode meaning "mind preserver".Found in Tanach , Proverbs 5, under A. herba-alba or A. Judaica. Absinthium, the plant's specific name, denotes the use of wormwood in the potent French drink.

Gaugin and van Gogh were roommates but tension between the two set the
stage for van Gogh's most infamous accomplishment, known even to those who
couldn't identify one of his paintings out of a lineup of Picassos.

Vincent had never been particularly stable, and Gaugin was no day at the beach himself. After the two had a violent argument - Gaugin left
town and van Gogh broke down. His established mental eccentricities aggravated
by a absinthe van Gogh began hearing things. With the cold, unrelenting logic of the insane, he deduced that the solution to the problem was to cut off his left ear.

He attempted to give the now-detached organ to a prostitute, insisting it was a
priceless gift.

I am hoping to have a less adventurous ride, but a great shabbus with the poison of dreamers none the less.

Uman Uman Uman

Rebbe Nachman said, Whoever comes to my gravesite (In the Ukrainian town of Uman)…no matter how serious his sins may be, I will do everything … By his very payos (sidecurls) I will pull him out of Gehenna (purgatory)! (Rabbi Nachman's Wisdom #141).

Ukrainian Jewish life in Kiev ended at Babyn Yar (Babi Yar) on September 29-30, 1941.The Ukrainians killed 33,771 Jews in less than two days which was not equaled in Auschwitz or any other death camp.

Personally, I’d rather burn in hell for all eternity with no hope for salvation ever from anyone, then give those Ukrainian Mother Fuckers a single Kopiyok.

They'll overthrow the Earth, Narf

A new French study in South Africa was released at the International Aids Society meeting in Rio shows that circumcision reduces the probability of acquiring HIV from an HIV-infected person by up to 70%. Some question the results of this study because many more men in the US, where male circumcision is practised, have HIV than in European countries where male circumcision is not widespread. But many HIV infections in the US and Europe are passed from male to male, and the primary risk is to the receptive partner in anal intercourse. Circumcision would not protect in that circumstance.
The issue is that foreskin can trap fluids, thus allowing HIV and other pathogens more time to infect. Further, the foreskin is rich in Langerhans cells that HIV can infect increasing the chances of infection.
IN OTHER NEWS
A recent article in a Bulgarian labor union newspaper claimed that Israeli scientists had hatched HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, to decimate the globe's population so Jews could one day rule the world.

Little Shit

.
.

.

Over Yom Tov in Israel my wife invited her little sisters’ fellow seminary friends for some of the meals. At one of these festive events a particularly stupid sem girl announced that her rebbe, rabbi Mitnick of Brooklyn told her that “the Zionists were all evil, godless and that no good will come from them, that the gadol hador the chazon ish fought them at every venue and won, and ah’sured women to join the army under the banner of Harug Va’al Yavor in fact the state should be run by his talmidim and that would make everything good because people would listen to them. And that the bad that the crazy Zionists had done out weighs any of the good.”
To which I responded
- The only reason Mitnick says that the Chazon Ish was the Gadol Hador is to defend his rebbe the Pachad Itzchok from the attacks of the Griz.
-We never ever posken like the Chazon Ish
-If bad negates good then Mitnick’s druggy hang out “Our Place” is a den of whores.
-What if this is His Chalta Degulah , is Mitnick our anti-christ ?
-People don’t listen to G-d why would they listen to the talmidum of the Chazon Ish?
-Shir Hamalos TTT of Hatikva

I thought that I had killed two birds with one stone. Deflated Mitnick’s cocky and no more sem girls to ruin me Yom Tov. WRONG.
The next day twice as many showed up they all wanted to hear more.
