You find this position in halakhic texts as well. (See Naomi Graetz, _Domestic Violence in jewish Law_.) I don't know any community that would follow such opinions anymore, but most Muslims in the Western world would be in exactly the same position. The fight isn't against Islam per se, it's against ignorance and arroance as a form of religious piety.
