Back off of Tomy Boy
Orthomummyof4in5T and Ze'ev are peeved at everyone's favorite lefty MK Tomy Lapid for stating that "It is very sad that people exploit the name of the Holocaust for political ends." When a year ago he said in reference to the Palestinians situation :
". . . I saw an old woman rummaging through the ruins of her house looking for her medication, and it reminded me of my grandmother who was thrown out of her house during the Shoah".
Yossel (Tomy) Lapid was born in Yugoslavia in 1931 and immigrated in 1948.He is the head of the Shuni party, Yosef Lapid has been a MK since 1999. Somewhere in between those above dates we find why I won't agree with them, though what he did can be seen as a double standard and much of his rhetoric in general is narishkeit - foolishness to the 10th, even so he has entitlements we should never be able to enjoy.
Mr Lapid is a Holocaust survivor.
His grandmother was not.
She died in Auschwitz.

By that logic, since I have relatives who died in the Holocaust, shouldn't I also be entitled to make comparisons to the Holocaust (along with the millions of Jews alive today who also lost family members)?

1 it's not about logic
2 all he said was that it reminded him of the war
3 Mr Lapid is a Holocaust survivor not just his grandmother

1) Agreed, there is often very little logic surrounding what ahppens in Israel.
2) It is his right to say that the old Arab woman reminded him of his grandmother who died in the Shoah, but don't go and complain when other people follow his lead and make Holocaust references for political ends.
3) True. But the fact is, he's a very public politician, and not just some guy. When he spoke in his position as deputy prime minister, and minister of Justice, he wasn't just speaking for himself as a survivor, but his comments were representing the sentiments of a high ranking offical in the Israeli government.
4) Ruth Matar, of Women in Green, also a survivor made comparisons between "Disengagement" and the Holocaust and I did not find people to be so forgiving of her even though she was a survivor...
It seems like in this case, the door swings only one way...

1)it's NEVER about logic in israel
2)saying it reminded him is not saying it is the same(btw i was in favor of the orange stars)
3)in israel everyone is a politician, and not just some guy.
4)Ruth Matar is as well entitled

1) At least we agree that there is no logic...
2) You sound like you are doing Bill Clinton impersonations... (What does "it" really mean)...
3)Some people are more political and public than others...

Amshi, I was pointing out an example of hypocrisy. I stand by it. If Tommy Lapid is comfortable with Holocaust comparisons, fine. If he isn't, as he stated this week, then he shouldn't do it himself. Period.
