Court approves use of fallen IDF soldier's sperm for insemination

In a precedent-setting move, the Ramat Gan Family Court on Sunday approved the request of a family to allow the sperm of their slain son to be used for insemination.

The son, K., was killed by Palestinian sniper fire while serving in a selected infantry corps battalion of the Israel Defense Forces in the Gaza Strip in August 2002.

The sperm will be used to impregnate a woman who the soldier had never met. Judge Alisa Miller said that the decision was made in accordance with the parents' request, adding that it was an isolated ruling that would have no bearing on future decisions in similar cases. "The ruling resolves the present incident but does not affect other incidents," she said.

The petition for use of the soldier's sperm was submitted to the court on behalf of the family by attorney Irit Rosenblum.

According to the petition, the soldier had discussed with his family his desire to start a family. After his death, a sample of his sperm was preserved at the Sheba Medical Center and his mother established contact with women interested in using his sperm for impregnation.

Some 40 women responded to the soldier's mother's call, and one woman was chosen to carry the sperm. The soldier's parents and the potential mother asked the hospital to carry out the insemination.

The hospital, at the instruction of Attorney General Menachem Mazuz, refused to grant the parents' request without court approval.

The family wrote in its petition that it would have been the wish of their dead son to use his sperm to impregnate the woman and said that it was their right as potential grandparents to carry out the insemination. They promised that they would keep to their role as grandparents and would not interfere in the life of the child.

The request was approved despite a ruling made three years ago,according to which the parents of the dead have no standing rights in these sorts of issues.

This is the first time a court has approved the use of a deceased man's sperm for the insemination of a woman he had never met. This is also the first time the court has approved a sperm donation in which the donor and the recipient did not know each other, yet the donor's identity was not concealed.

The court had in the past approved the request of a woman to use her dead partner's sperm for her own impregnation.

Elan Halimi, a 23-year-old telephone salesman , was lured into a trap on January 21, in the southern Parisian suburb of Sceaux. Instead of the date he expected, he was beaten up, bundled into the boot of a car and taken to a room in a nearby apartment block.
For three weeks his captors sent threatening messages to his family by telephone and e-mail demanding varying amounts of money. They included an image of Halimi with his face entirely bound in heavy tape. His father was told: “You’re a Jew, you’ve only got to ask around at the synagogue.”
But on February 13, the gang’s leader, 25-year-old Youssouf Fofana, ran out of patience. The autopsy shows that Halimi was burned with cigarettes and hit repeatedly with a blunt object. He was then doused in some kind of acid or industrial fluid – apparently to efface forensic evidence – which caused burns over 80% of his body.
Naked, bound and gagged, Halimi was dumped – just alive – near a railway line at Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois. He managed to drag himself a small distance before being discovered by locals, but died on the way to hospital.
“If he hadn’t been Jewish, he would not have been murdered,” Halimi’s mother Ruth said.

A chemist by the name of Ranajit Ghosh discovered the V-series nerve agents at the Government research establishment in England in 1952; VX was passed over in favour of continuing with sarin as their chemical weapon of choice. England unilaterally renounced chemical and biological weapons in 1956. In 1958 the British government traded their research on VX technology with us in exchange for information on thermonukes . The US then went into production of large amounts of VX in 1961. Post-treaty disposal included the US Army's CHASE (Cut Holes And Sink 'Em) program, in which old ships were filled with chemical weapons stockpiles and then scuttled. CHASE 8 was conducted on June 15, 1967, in which the S.S. Cpl. Eric G. Gibson was filled with 7,380 VX rockets and scuttled in 7,200 feet of water, off the coast of Jersey. The US is also destroying chemical weapons stockpiles containing VX in nine other locations, one of which is in Russia. In 2005, it was reported that more than 250,000 US gallons (950 m³) of the chemical weapon are stored at the in Indiana.

Nerve Agent VX can also be delivered in binary chemical weapons which mix in-flight to form the agent prior to release. Binary VX is refered to as VX2, and is created by mixing O-(2-diisopropylaminoethyl) O'-ethyl methylphosphonite (Agent QL) with sulfure (Agent NE) as is done in the BIGEye aerial chemical bomb. It may also be produced by mixing with other sulfur compounds, as with the liquid dimethyl polysulfide mixture (Agent NM) in the cancelled XM-768 8-inch binary projectile program.

VE (S-(Diethylamino)ethyl O-ethyl ethylphosphonothioate) is a "V-series" nerve agent closely related to the better-known VX nerve agent.
Like most of the agents in the V-series (with the exception of VX), VE has not been extensively studied outside of military science. Little is known about this compound other than its chemical formula.

It is commonly theorized that the so called "second-generation" V series agents came from a cold war era Russian chemical weapons development program. They may have been developed sometime between 1950 and 1990. They have similar lethal dose levels to VX (between 10-50 mg) and have similar symptoms and method of action to other nerve agents that act on cholinesterase, and treatment remains the same, but the window for effectively treating second generation V series seizures is shorter. In addition to the standard seizures, some of the second generation V series agents are known to cause coma.

V-series nerve agents, developed in the 1950s, are similar to, but more advanced than, G-series agents. This class includes VE, VG, VM, VS, and VX. These agents are more toxic and more persistent than the G-agents and present a greater skin hazard. They are used for long-term contamination of territory.

It kills within minutes if inhaled or deposited on the skin; protection from VX would require both protective suits and masks. Accidental release of VX in Utah in 1968 caused the death of thousands of sheep, some of them as far as 40 miles from where the gas escaped.

Built as a church in 1857 and home to successive religious groups (both Jewish and missionary Christian), the building was acquired in 1902 by Shaarey Shamoyim, the First-Roumanian American congregation. The "Rumanische shul" conducted daily, Shabos and holiday services.The roof of the 150-year-old synagogue once renowned as the Cantors' Carnegie Hall, where the choir had included Red Buttons and Eddie Cantor, collapsed yesterday, forcing evacuations.
The collapse began before 4 p.m. in a cascade of timbers, tar paper and debris, after beams supporting the roof came loose, the authorities said late yesterday. There were no injuries. Water damage was detected on the roof several weeks earlier, and congregants were told to stay away until planned repairs were performed.
By early last night, with more than 100 firefighters and other emergency workers on the scene, it was unclear whether the building could be salvaged and whether the congregation had sufficient insurance to cover the damage.
One of a handful of historic churches and synagogues that have survived decades of decline and redevelopment in Lower Manhattan, it has not been designated as a city landmark and could be demolished if repairs prove impractical. Rabbi Shmuel Spiegel, who leads the congregation of about 100, said that one of his first fears was for its Torahs and holy books, which he had been unable to examine because emergency workers barred entrance. But he said the Torahs and books had been stored beneath a section of the roof that appeared to be intact.
The cause of the collapse remained unknown last night, and there was no record of recent structural building violations at the synagogue. Rabbi Spiegel said that water damage became apparent in the building's roof about seven weeks ago, and that he retained an engineer to assess the risk after the congregation's insurance company had refused to honor a claim for repairs.

The other held his Horse firm, and watched in awe as the sequence unfolded.They thought that the Horse reared because of a Cougar or Bear, and wanted to film it. With only a little more than a minutes time left of film, the animals stood up, and began to run.There was major concern for safety, although too shocked to make any comment.They ran and then shot what has become the most compelling film evidence ever gathered of the beasts. A folding submachine gun concept - a firearm that can be folded into an unsuspicially looking package and then quickly unfolded and brought to action when necessary. Patented design in 1986, and few prototypes were made by Ares Inc in about the same time. However, complexities of the individual ownership of a fully automatic weapon like submachine gun, as well as other issues caused this project to be shelved. What is more interesting, that in about same time at least one American gunsmith, Dave Boatman, produced very similar weapon and actually marketed it before US Government prohibited further manufacture of fully automatic weapons for civilian consumption in 1986. The actual connections between Ares FMG weapon and M-21 weapon are unknown, but two submachine guns are almost identical in concept and very close in design details. Furthermore, very similar weapon was produced several years later in Russia as the PP-90. It has been made in limited number but found to be unreliable and awkward to operate.
The Ares FMG is a simple blowback weapon, firing from open bolt. Bolt is telescoped around the barrel, return spring also is located around the barrel, inside the bolt. Receiver is made from stamped steel, and consists of two parts, hinged at the middle of the weapon. Hollow pistol grip is also hinged to the receiver, and hosts the box magazine. Charging handle was located at the bottom in the front of the receiver, and stayed still when gun was fired. It also served as a protection for shooter's supporting hand, to avoid it from slipping forward and toward the muzzle. To fold the weapon, user must push the lock button, located inside bottom-opened rear part of the receiver just behind the pistol grip, then fold the rear part of the receiver down and forward. To unfold the Ares gun, one must push locking buttons at either side of the front part of the receiver, then pull weapon casing open. Boatman's M-21 gun differed in the locking arrangements of folding receiver / casing - it had a single latch, located on the top front section of the receiver next to the hinge point. Another difference between Ares FMG and Boatman's M-21 was in the sights. Ares gun had no sights at all, as it was probably designed as a very close combat weapon. M-21 had sights concealed within detachable carrying handle. M-21 also had removable rear plate with fake telescoped rod antenna, for better imitation of the portable radio unit and as a dust cover that protected inner workings of the weapon when stored or carried in folded configuration. This plate should be removed before gun can be brought from folded to open position. Another difference between Ares FMG and M-21 was that the latter has several sling swivels, and Ares gun had none.

Many feel the M16 is by far the more superior weapon . It's lighter, more accurate, more versatile, and with proper maintenance it is very reliable. Indeed, it might be less sand proof then the Galil/AK47 series. However, all you need is to clean it once a day and it will work properly. Since modern armies clean their smallarms on a daily even during combat deployment this is a non-issue.
In fact, most of the myth regarding the M16 unreliability date back to the Vietnam War when the M16 was first issued. The 5.56 ammunition given then to the troops used a low quality sticky powder that caused massive buildup of dirt in the M16 mechanism and eventually to jamming problems. When the ammunition was changed, the misfire problems disappeared as well.

The AK-47 was designed also with a different bolt assembly, a rolling bolt type I believe (correct me if I am wrong), Mr. Kalashnikov verifies this in a History Channel special on the AK, in which he refutes claims by some that he copied the MP-44 design, which leads me to believe that he had his own ideas as far as what mechanism would drive the gun as the two are fairly different. Perhaps he just saw the skeleton/frame of MP-44 as effective, and therefore used it. One could make a rough car analogy out of this, say taking the body of a Camaro and making our own body fairly similar, but putting a Ferrari's inner-mechanism in there (remember this analogy is ROUGH, lol). As far as saying that 5.56 round was made to "neutralize" the enemy, I believe this is more of a political word play anything else. The trend nowadays is indeed the smaller 5.56x45 cartridge (and it's Russian counterpart the 5.45x39 used in the AK-74, however this is rumored to be deemed to switch to a 6mm by the Russians, probably not soon though, considering funding is not very good) because one can still make them high-powered with high velicities and therefore good penetration from a smaller round. The smaller round was not only adopted because it would have similar effectiveness and less recoil, but also to allow soldiers to increase the amount of ammunition that they carry without any additional weight when switching from the .30 and 7.62 rounds. The 7.62mm round can rip through kevlar fairly easily, and so can the 5.56 and 5.45 cartridges. The American military for example gives its frontline soldiers bullet-proof vests that have steel and ceramic armor plates which can and do indeed stop the 7.62 rounds. This is Level III and Level IV protection that cannot be given just by kevlar, as shown by the first dead American soldier in the recent Gulf War II. The ceramic plate in the vest does not go all the way up and down the vest, as it mostly protects the chest and most of the abdomen. The first dead American soldier was shot in very lower part of his abdomen where the ceramic plate does not reach and he died, while his partner was shot in the chest and was actually put back into action the same day with no injury, both being shot by an AK-47's 7.62x39 round. The reason the Russians switched from the 7.62 to the 5.45, besides the weight and recoil factors addresed earlier, was the the 7.62x39 had a fairly low velocity . This caused real ineffectiveness beyond 300 meters and strange and sudden dropoff in trajectory. However being wider and going slow does have its benefits up close where bones are not only penetrated but shattered. The high-velocity round that the 5.45mm is gets its effectiveness and penetration from velocity, and has a good trajectory, the AK-74 being significantly more accurate in field tests than the AK-47 at both long and short ranges. As far as having a choice weapon, I think it would really depend on the situation. In Vietnam, it would have to be tough so probably the AK, but in an urban envirnment, why not reap the advantages of the more accurate M-16, the accuracy coming from the tight-tolerances which the AK lacks (and the problems associated with the reliability of them.) An all around choice weapon would probably be an AK-74 chambered for the 5.56x45 cartridge, simply because of the reliability of the AK, and the American ammunition because even the Russians have admitted the 5.56 round to be more accurate than their 5.45x39

Machines will perform euthanasia on terminally ill patients in Israel under legislation devised not to offend Jewish law, which forbids people taking human life.
A special timer will be fitted to a patient's respirator which will sound an alarm 12 hours before turning it off.
Normally, carers would override the alarm and keep the respirator turned on but, if various stringent conditions are met, including the giving of consent by the patient or legal guardian, the alarm would not be overridden.
The bill, which was approved at the third and final reading in the Knesset by 22 votes to three with one abstention, will become law next year.

The Palestinian Authority has turned the once revered Gaza communities into training camps for armed and as a position to launch rockets.

As recent as yesterday Two Kassam rockets were fired from Gaza, toward Israeli towns in the western Negev. A Hamas official told the World Tribune that the rockets were fired from former Jewish towns that have been converted into launching sites for the war against the Jewish State.

On "Good Morning America" this week, a voice-mail message from Michael Jackson to his former business adviser was aired. It includes comments about Jews robbing performers .Here are a few gems from the kid toucher:

Agudath Israel of America
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Agudath Israel of America (or Agudas Yisroel of America or Agudat Yisrael of America or simply the Agudah [agudah "gathering" or "union" ]), is a Haredi Judaism Jewish communal organization in the U.S. loosely affiliated with the international World Agudath Israel. Not all Haredi groups belong to the Agudah. (thank G-d)

For example, Satmar considers Agudah to be too "pro-Zionist",
(who the hell needs them?)
and Lubavitch views it as too hostile to its own agenda.(agudah was never welcoming ti Chabad and besides Lubobs are too inclusive for the likes of yeshivasha velt *shudder*)

Functions
Agudah in the United States has managed to retain its major Hasidic factions, with members from the Ger Hasidim in America working together within the organization and its Lithuanian mitnagdim partners. Agudah represents many members of the yeshiva world, known as mitnagdim, and sectors of Hasidic Judaism, commonly known as Haredim or "ultra-Orthodox" Jews. Not all Hasidic Jewish groups are affiliated with Agudath Israel.(so long as they "toe the party line" of select anti-semitism and catholic dogma) .
It has ideological connections with both the Agudat Israel party and with Degel HaTorah two Israeli Orthodox Jewish political parties( for the mentally un-stable).
In Israel, Degel and Agudah were in a political coalition called United Torah Judaism (UTJ) that is presently defunct.( yay G-d)
AIA is also a part of the World Agudath Israel organization, which convenes international conferences and religious conclaves.( sounds like something out of Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion ).

History
The original Agudath Israel movement was established in Europe in 1912 by some of the most famous Orthodox rabbis of the time. It grew during the 1920s and 1930s to be the political, communal, and cultural voice of those Orthodox Jews who were not part of Zionism's Orthodox Jewish Mizrachi party( like Rav Kook or other "evil" lovers of jews).
"Rabbi" Moshe Sheretz lead the expansion of the movement during the 1950s until his death during the mid-1990s as its chief lay leader , ( also known as the ' gadol maker' he created R' Frand and Sruli Riesmann he endorsed much of the illegal activites of the agudah under the banner of leman Hashem and he also chose the now incarcerated David Schick to head the agudah's ethics board) .

Members of an Orthodox Jewish community in Lakewood, New Jersey are pulling the plug on the Internet, WCBS 880’s Jim Taylor reports.Rabbi Moshe Weisberg says the dangers simply outweigh the benefits of Internet access in the home. Failure to abide by the rule will result in a student's expulsion from the yeshiva, the Orthodox school they attend. Rabbi Moshe Zev Weisberg is like many of the men who live in what some view as the mecca of Orthodox Judaism.
Rabbi Moshe Zev Weisberg runs the Lakewood Community Services Corp. His father was one of the inaugural students at Lakewood's Beth Medrash Govoha, the country's largest rabbinical college, when its first class entered in 1943.
Weisberg's family moved to Brooklyn, and he returned to Lakewood as a 19-year-old student at the college.
He's now 50 and still hasn't left.
In fact, he's a pillar in the Orthodox community, a recognized face for Latino immigrants learning English and a trusted friend to elected officials.
"A couple of years back, both on a personal level and on a communal level, there was a strong feeling it was time to give back and get more involved," Weisberg said. "There's a tremendous amount of satisfaction when you're able to provide programs and services that benefit people."
About 10 years ago, members of the Orthodox community needed someone to represent them -- behind the scenes most of the time, but publicly if the issue warranted it -- and Weisberg was tapped.
He thinks it's because his experience dealing with the federal government for work -- his day job is as a financial consultant to colleges and universities -- made him a natural to help navigate government at home.
In 1997, Weisberg helped incorporate the Lakewood Community Services Corp., a nonprofit agency that now does everything from running English as a Second Language classes to ferrying kosher meals to homebound senior citizens.
Weisberg, now president of the corporation, also sits on the Vaad, a council of leaders in the Orthodox community that helps residents with problems ranging from the pedantic to the pressing.
But Weisberg doesn't see himself as a leader. He just helps where it's necessary.
"The more you get involved, the more you see successful outcomes," Weisberg said. "You give (people) a little bit and they're able to use that little bit and .'.'. better their lives. You can't beat that."

Rabbi Kahane ZT"L HY"D ( founder of Jewish Defense League and Kach ) adhered to the belief that there is no such thing as a Palestinian people; that in fact the people who call themselves Palestinian are a mixture of disparate and unrelated Arab clans with no claim to ethnic identity, and that all native Palestinian Arabs seek the destruction of all Israelis. Thus Kahane proposed the forcible deportation of all Arabs from all lands controlled by the Israeli government. In his view, evicting all Palestinians , was the only acceptable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict which we can now accept as axiomatic.

As a teenager he became an admirer of Zeev Jabotinsky, a frequent guest in Kahane's home. He personally led protests against Ernest Bevin who opposed the foundation of Israel on the grounds that Britain should side with the Arab Muslims aspirations for an independent state. Kahane also organized and launched public demonstrations in the US against the Soviet Union's policy of persecuting Zionist activists and curbing Jewish emigration to Israel. He was a central activist in the "Free Soviet (Russian) Jewry" movement and is widely credited with the release of the Russian refuseniks to Israel.

While concluding a speech in New York, Kahane was murdered by El Sayyid Nosair, a member of an terrorist cell operating in New York . According to prosecutors, a man named Wadih el Hage purchased the .38 caliber gun used by Nosair. El-Hage was told by a man named Mahmud Abouhalima to buy the gun. Nosair was acquitted of murder because no witness actually saw him pull the trigger, but he was convicted of gun charges.

This is really unbelievable stuff!!! A 9 minute video of jewish life in munkatch. You see the munkatcher chasuneh, about three minutes in, some kids singing Hatikva (nusach Shem Shloma ?) then a cheder, a seforim store, and life on the streets. About seven minutes in are the irreligious youth dancing a mixed hora singing chasidisha nigunim all the while... the ups and downs of life in prewar munkatch. Enough to make you cry. What a lost world!!! It's just amazing. Enjoy!

The Pope has set up a committee to determine whether an anti-Semitic (which one isn't) priest should be declared a saint.

The French priest, Leon Dehon, said in 1925 that Jews thirst for money and are not deterred by shady business dealings. He also said that Jews control the world economy and press (go no?).

Members of the Satmar Rebbe's elder son Aaron’s community, invaded the Simchas Torah services at the Williamsburg shul where his younger brother is spiritual leader.The intrusion resulted in disturbances outside the Shul and police were called to disperse a crowd whose size was estimated at between 500 and 1,000 people. Police arrested 26 men, after they entered offices connected to the synagogue. The men, followers of Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum, were accused of scouring documents and trashing furniture and equipment.The men were charged with misdemeanours including burglary, criminal mischief, petty larceny and trespassing.

The post Heimishe were easily identified as their Austro-Hungarian accents reared its’ ugly head, heck even famed Shtriemel was present (maybe ?).The overall atmosphere was anti-clerical or at least charged with rage against the Chasidic community. Yada , Yada , Yada ....

Some Points of Interest to Me:

-One woman wanted to know how the ‘Chasidics’ though ‘all’ poor, can ‘all’ afford big expensive cars. To which yours truly shut her down by heckling “All? All?”

-One gentleman who looked like his ancestors came from Puerto Rico asked several poignant questions, his annunciation though gave him away as a post-‘Yoli’.A very angry one at that.

-Some oldhag wanted to know why her grandson wanted to become " a Lubavitch".(Duh the hot girls , think Mid'yan).

-After the lecture we sat around guessing who’s’ who, which one of us was or is which blogger.

-We had 15 men with a yeshiva education and no minyan.

-In the elevator with a mix of neo-/ post-/ quasi-/ and pre-s one post-bobver named ‘Motti” claimed that a presumptuous fellow of the U/O Litvish persuasion said “Motti I’m glad you are no longer chassidish , why don’t you become a Litvak”

-I met someone once named Tully, who introduced me to his friend (?) [life's partner (?)] and had managed to lose his accent, the two of them are making a documentary about faith in America. Update see here

Europe Died in Auschwitz

I was walking along Raval (in Barcelona) when all of a sudden I understood that Europe died with Auschwitz. We assassinated 6 million Jews in order to end up bringing in 20 million Muslims!

We burnt in Auschwitz the culture, intelligence and power to create.

We burnt the people of the world, the one who is proclaimed the chosen people of God.

Because it is the people who gave to humanity the epic figures who were capable of changing history (Christ, Marx, Einstein, Freud...) and who represent the origin of progress and wellbeing.

We must admit that Europe, by relaxing its borders and giving in under the pretext of tolerance to the values of a fallacious cultural relativism, opened its doors to 20 million Muslims, often illiterates and fanatics that we could meet, at best, in places such as Raval, the poorest of the nations and of the ghettos, and who are preparing the worst, such as the 9/11 and the Madrid bombing and who are lodged in apartment blocs provided by the social welfare.

We also have exchanged culture with fanaticism, the capacity to create with the will to destroy, the wisdom with the superstition. We have exchanged the transcendental instinct of the Jews, who even under the worst possible conditions have always looked for a better, peaceful world, for the suicide bomber.

We have exchanged the pride of life for the fanatic obsession of death. Our death and that of our children.

What a grave mistake we made!

Last Sunday afternoon I had a nice chat with sixth-grade children and their parents about oral sex. Let me assure you that when I studied to be a rabbi, oral sex was not an elective in my seminary’s curriculum, but now it seems to me of much greater importance than teaching these kids how to bless a challah bread.
... it is just unbelievably embarrassing to talk about this stuff. I am a fearless public speaker but my palms were sweating all through the lecture last Sunday. In the follow-up to the lecture, the main question the kids had was, “Do you really have sex?”
...The avalanche’s roar carries a single message: love and sex do not have to be connected in any way at all. Sex can be just hooking up, this message says, and to avoid pregnancy (obviously true) and to avoid AIDS and STDS (utterly false) oral sex is seen by our kids as nothing more than an after-school snack. Many kids now consider it as nothing more than a social convention, a mark of popularity, a sign of sexual liberation and a pleasant way to pass the time in the back of the bus on the way to school.
...I asked the girls I teach and love last Sunday, “When you offer oral sex to a boy who does not love you and may not even like you and who will most probably destroy your reputation by telling his friends what you will do, are you proud of yourself? Do you think you are making your parents proud of you? Do you think this is what God wants you to do with your body? You are better than that. You are much better than that.”
I asked the boys I teach and love last Sunday, “When you ask or beg or plead or coerce or manipulate a young girl who likes you and just wants to be popular to go down on you, are you proud of doing that to her? Do you think you are making your parents proud of you? Do you think this is what God wants you to do with your body? You are better than that. You are much better than that.”
Then I surrendered to my need to explain that this was not just me talking, but our faith talking and so I quoted the Talmud to them: “Be very careful if you make a woman cry, because God counts her tears. The woman came out of a man’s rib: Not from his feet to be walked on. Not from his head to be superior, but from the side to be equal. Under the arm to be protected, and next to the heart to be loved.”
And then I took a deep breath and wiped the sweat off my palms and watched their faces as they thought about something deeply important and difficult. Maybe I changed nothing. I think I started some important conversations at home, and all this happened in my synagogue. Last Sunday I know I did my job, and I did it without teaching anybody how to bless a challah.

The Lesson of Avraham
In spite of the detailed description devoted to the life and accomplishments of our father Avraham, he remains an enigmatic figure to us. How did one human being, without an army, a government, a publicity apparatus, change the face of his generation and of all later generations? What was his secret strength that allowed him not only to stand alone against the pagan, violent society of his time but also to actually gain the respect and eventually influence that very society?
I do not pretend to have any particular new insight into this matter, nevertheless I think that the Torah itself casts light on this issue. It describes Avraham as a person whose influence flowed from his personality and his behavior rather than from public pronouncements or ideological statements. By feeding the hungry, befriending the lonely, remaining loyal to those who were no longer really worthy of his loyalty, he "called out the name of the Lord" wherever he was. People saw in him a special person, a unique figure, a hero of spirit and action. Eventually people saw godliness in him. And finally, people saw God Himself, so to speak, through Avarham's eyes and faith. All of this through Avraham's behavior, demeanor and public reputation.
It is interesting that this lesson of Avraham was meant to be an example for all later generations, especially those of his descendants. The view of Judaism regarding the description of the lives of Avraham, Yitzchak, Yakov, Sarah, Rivka, Leah and Rochel, is that this description was meant as a "sign" - an instructive lesson of how to live and behave - to their generations. Jews were to ask themselves: "When will my actions equal those of my forbearers?" The lives, attitudes and behavior of the founders of Judaism were to be the everlasting standard by which all generations of Jews would measure themselves. Thus the Torah really does not describe Avraham to us as much as it sets out a program for our lives and aspirations.
I have mentioned many times before in these columns that Western society, post-modern and essentially rootless, pursuing pleasure and individual gratification at almost all cost, unwilling to sacrifice for the future or for others, suffers from a lack of heroes and role models. Sports stars, movie actors and actresses, princesses and politicians, all have proven to be poor objects of emulation and imitation. Having no standard by which to measure ourselves, we are unhappy in our narcissism and mediocrity. We do not realize the cost to ourselves and our world of remaining ignorant of Torah and Jewish tradition, of not attempting to reach out and touch the hem of our father Avraham, of being smug and self-righteous in our prosperity and selfishness.
Having no memory any longer even of our grandparents, let alone of Avraham, modern American Jews facing self-induced extinction, blissfully whistle past the graveyard and espouse causes and struggles that can only further dim the Jewish spark still remaining within us. We were meant to represent godliness, morality, goodness, tradition, loyalty, and family in the world. These were the prime beliefs of Avraham and through his behavior, the rest of humanity came to recognize and even adopt these values. Does the non-Jewish world see these traits and life-style in the Jewish community today? Are we interested in "calling out to the name of the Lord" in today's world? Are we proud to be the children and people of Avraham, or do we feel the whole matter to be superfluous and irrelevant to us and our families in today's world? These are the crucial questions that face Jews today - not pluralism, peace processes, continuity and other manufactured sloganeering. Let us be the children of Avraham in deed as in name!

Gad Elbaz, the very frum singer whose sound, swagger and looks have won him many young fans. With giggling teens pressed up against the backstage gate at concerts hoping to glimpse at the 23-year-old "pop idol" and tons of e-mails calling him a "world-class hunk," the frequent phone calls pledging love and the adoration visible at his shows have put him in trouble with the ultra-very frum.

Elbaz is a compact, energetic presence his olive skin and dark eyes reflect his family's North African roots. Of his three solo albums, "Meanings" has had the most success, selling 80,000 copies since last spring.

Moran Elbaz, 19, was once a fan. Now his wife, mother of his son, Benjamin. The two met after Moran organized an Elbaz concert . Now Moran finds herself fielding a steady stream of phone calls from young females, who often hang up once she asks the reason for the call.

"He is so handsome," gushes Etti, 17, whose ankle-length skirt and turtleneck sweater fit the modesty requirements of the ultra-Orthodox dress code. "He's also good and sweet.""Tell Gadi we're lovesick over him," Etti says over her shoulder as she is escorted back to the women's section.

It tries to tell of "the shattering" of one of Judaism's core beliefs codified by the Rambam. The book is the winner of the 2004 Samuel Belkin Literary Award from Yeshiva University.

The book "The Limits of Orthodox Theology: Maimonides' Thirteen Principles Reappraised" (Littman Library of Jewish Civilization (Series) by Marc Shapiro takes issue with the widespread assumption that Maimonides' famous Thirteen Principles are the last word in Orthodox Jewish theology. The author shows that numerous traditional theologians in the last 900 years have in fact taken issue with Maimonides' principles, both in their details as well as with regard to certain fundamental points in Maimonides formulation.
It is commonly asserted that Maimonides' famous Thirteen Principles are the last word in Orthodox Jewish theology. This is a very popular notion, and is often repeated by scholars from all camps in Judaism. Yet such a position ignores the long history of Jewish theology in which Maimonides' principles have been subject to great dispute.
The book begins with a discussion of the significance of the principles and illustrates how they assumed such a central place in traditional Judaism. Each of the principles is then considered in turn; the reasons underlying Maimonides' formulation are expounded and the disputes that have arisen concerning them are discussed in detail. Marc B. Shapiro's authoritative analysis makes it quite clear that the notion that Maimonides principles are the last word in traditional Jewish theology is a misconception, and that even Maimonides himself was not fully convinced of every aspect of his formulation.At the Yeshiva University's Seforim Sale, run by the Student Organization of Yeshiva (SOY) a featured lecture was given by Marc B. Shapiro who wrote the above book.
